Mobile Internet in the Canary Islands 2024

Added: 08.12.2023, Updated: 12.12.2023,

The Canary Islands are one of the most popular destinations among Polish tourists. They belong to Spain, so we can cross the borders only with an ID card, but the proximity to the African continent makes us feel like on an exotic vacation far from Europe. Each island differs in terrain and tourist attractions, also even the most demanding tourist will find something for himself. However, what is the question of using the Internet in the "Canaries"?

1. Roaming

As of June 2017, roaming fees in European Union countries have been abolished, but unfortunately this does not mean that we will not pay for Internet use. After using the data package, the size of which depends on our tariff, we will have to pay for the next MB used.  Despite the favorable changes, roaming can still cost a tourist a lot of money.

2. SIM cards

SIM cards in the Canary IslandsTo sleep soundly and not stress about the phone bill, there is the option of buying a SIM card from a local operator. We can choose the tariff plan that suits us, the number of GB to use and other convenient features. However, recently, due to terrorist attacks in the EU, a regulation came into effect making it mandatory to register every SIM card. For some travelers, this may be an additional obstacle, as it is mostly a time-consuming process.

3. Public hotspots

Canarian resorts are no different and also offer WiFi access in their restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels. However, let's remember that the island's location makes it difficult to install super-fast fiber, so we are often doomed to a rather slow connection, especially if it doesn't require a password and is besieged by tourists eager to connect to the social media world. Let's also remember that connecting to an unsecured network risks having our data intercepted! Let's be especially careful when logging into bank accounts and business emails.

4. XOXO WiFi mobile router

A personal router to which we can connect up to 5 devices (tablets, phones, laptops, etc.) with LTE coverage and unlimited data. With this small device, we can go around all the islands using maps, share photos and snaps of our trips instantly, and notify friends of our travel progress! It is also worth adding about security. XOXO WiFi is protected by a password, which only you and your loved ones can access. In addition, the device is pocket-sized, so it certainly won't take up much space in your suitcase.
