Today's technology is developing at such a rapid pace that all the innovations created a few years ago may already be obsolete and outdated. That's why when Poles experienced LTE data transfer for the first time some eight years ago, it was a shock to everyone that anything could be so fast and convenient to use. Today, on the other hand, the standard has become so widespread that no one feels the feeling of true innovation anymore. That could all change this year and in two years in Poland. We are just entering a new, fifth generation of mobile telephony!
The first to experience the new changes will be residents of Sweden's Stockholm and Estonia's Tallinn. Thanks to TeliaSonera, a popular mobile network operator in these countries, these are to be the first two cities in the world to support a 5G network as of 2018. The Poles, however, do not intend to be behind on this issue. Former Minister of Digitization Anna Strezynska has already announced that the latest generation of mobile telephony in Poland is expected to debut in 2020, while the first city to experience the revolution will be Lodz.
What changes will the 5G network introduce? First of all, all mobile Internet users will be able to use it for longer, as the energy required to use mobile communications will be reduced (20% less energy consumption compared to 4G LTE). The new standard will also be made more dense by additional access points, which will improve coverage in the field. Preliminary specifications show that data transfer will be much faster. Downloading is expected to be at 20 Gb per second, while uploading will be at 10 Gb per second. The 5G standard is to be based on high-frequency wavelengths, which are currently used in satellite TV technology.
These changes will certainly improve the quality of data transfer to the point that network users will have no problems watching movies in 4K via streaming. However, it should be remembered that the changes offered by 5G will not be facilitations for cell phone owners only. The new generation is first and foremost an opportunity for IoT. Operating gigantic data between devices will become simple and instantaneous. Certainly, the 5G network will find application in smart home technology, in the production of state-of-the-art equipment, where connectivity to the network is an absolute basis for proper functioning, or in the developing prototypes of future devices (such as autonomous cars).
We will keep a close eye on how the 5G network will be adopted in Poland and around the world. Perhaps traveling around the world will also become even easier and more enjoyable.
